Ten tips for managing a long-distance job search.Question: What’s the best way to manage a long-distance job search? â€" CB of Acton, MAAnswer: Whenever someone talks about relocating, I immediately want to ask: “Why do you want to move?”I ask this because relocating, especially in today’s saturated job market, can be difficult to do. Unless your skill set is incredibly unique and in high demand, recruiters and hiring managers will likely choose local candidates over out-of-towners to fill their roles.Why?For one, out-of-towners are more expensive. The company often has to pick up relocation costs. And second, they’re considered more of a flight risk. If you don’t have to relocate, then I don’t recommend doing it.But I understand the decision is not always in your hands. You may need to move back home to take care of an ailing parent. Or your significant other was just relocated for work and you need to follow. Or maybe the market has shifted and requires you to move.If relocation is likely on your horizon, I recommend following these ten steps to make your long-distance search run more smoothly.Do your market research.Whenever possible, research the market trends in your industry and identify locations where your line of work is in high demand and growing. This makes your skill set more valuable, and your current location less of an issue.Consider your roots.Consider locations where you either lived or worked there before, or have family there. Play up these facts in your cover letter to show recruiters you didn’t choose this location on a whim â€" you’re a safe bet.Target a specific location.It’s better to conduct a targeted job search, than taking an “I’ll move anywhere” approach because you will need to familiarize yourself with the market, build up connections and participate in networking activities in your desired location.Take a trip. Visit the location to make sure it’s the right place for you and your family. Familiarize yourself with the area â€" what’s the night life like? What neighborhoods would you want to live in? How are the schools?Make sure you can afford to move. Check out the cost of living differences between your current and your desired locations, as well as the going rate for your job’s compensation. This could change your salary requirements.Show family solidarity.Include the phrase “My family and I are willing to relocate to [location] at personal expense” (if applicable) within your resume and LinkedIn profile’s executive summary. This shows your commitment to relocate, and your family’s support.Don’t include your address.Remove your mailing address from your resume.There’s a lot of debate over this practice, but I prefer to leave the address off, rather than use a relative’s address in your target location. It just looks weird when your address says California but your current job says Connecticut, you know? If an application requires an address, that’s when I recommend using your relative’s local address.Make networking a high priority.You need all the help you can get when you’re relocating. Go through your contacts to determine who lives in your desired location and reconnect. Identify fellow alum who live in the area and introduce yourself. Start reading the local news online and explore local business directories and the chamber of commerce. Identify local groups to connect with that are industry-related.Be prepared to travel.If you’re going to relocate, you must commit to traveling often for face-to-face networking and interviewing. I Confessed to Feeling Lost at Work to My Boss - The Muse I Confessed to Feeling Lost at Work to My Boss Even when you know you’re having trouble wrapping your head around a new project, it’s hard to come to grips with the fact that you don’t know everything at work. I was Exhibit A of this phenomenon a few years ago after I accepted a job for which I had some pretty glaring knowledge gaps. But as hard as I tried convincing everyone that I knew exactly what I was doing, I eventually had to own up to the fact that I was completely lost. The good news? I didn’t get fired. The better news? I learned a few good lessons about admitting you don’t know something at work. 1. Your Boss Probably Already Knows When I took that gig, I didn’t meet all the qualifications. But I figured I’d found a way to convince the company that I was still the perfect candidate. Even worse, I assumed that the job would be easier than it looked on paper. I ended up being wrong about everything, and before I knew it, I was spending my nights trying to understand reports that seemed like they were written in another language. But after a month of flailing around, my boss called me into a meeting. Without mincing words, he said, “You’re not very good at this one thing in particular.” I wanted to deny his claim, especially since it sounded like I was about to be fired. But then he said, “But I kind of figured that when we hired you.” The truth is that hiring managers usually have a strong grasp of what they’re looking for during the interview process- and sometimes, that even means taking a chance on someone who’s not the ideal person for the job right this second. 2. You Can Only “Fake it ’Til You Make it” For So Long For a few weeks at that same job, I handed in assignments that I figured would be good enough. They showed that I had at least some competency in the role, and I thought the final products would be obvious cries for help to my boss. The only problem is that by handing in incomplete and incorrect work, I was wasting a lot of my colleagues’ time. One of the biggest lessons I learned was that I needed to ask for help sooner. I probably would’ve gotten the answers I was looking for- and ultimately, I would’ve turned in better work, faster. On top of that, I probably wouldn’t have annoyed all my teammates about so many little details that I was hired to handle. 3. It’s Up to You to Figure Out What You Need to Be More Qualified After my first few weeks on the job, I figured I’d have more training available to me. At the very least, I thought I’d have a couple days with my boss to learn the ropes of the job and the industry. But the reality was that he had a lot of things on his plate- and to a large degree, he’d hired me to handle the problems I was struggling to figure out. Eventually he was blunt with me and said, “I know you don’t know how to do this, and I know you need help. But on some of this, you need to identify how you can get the information you need without knocking on my door every few minutes.” I thought this was harsh at the time, but I know now that he was right. I was using my knowledge gaps as excuses for bad work, and it was showing. While there were very specific things about the company I needed to ask about, there were also online resources, books, and even courses that I could’ve relied on for some of the more general things I was trying to figure out. If you’re in these shoes, take it from me- make yourself a list of the things you’re not good at, and see how many you figure out on your own. (And if you’re struggling, here are five ways to handle being lost that won’t make you look bad.) Some of the things you’ll learn about yourself when you admit you’re lost aren’t the most fun to come to terms with. But even the toughest lessons can be helpful, especially when you’re denying yourself the help you need to improve at your job. And you might not always like what you hear when you own up to your knowledge gaps, but you will grow from the experience. So take the leap and tell your manager that you’re struggling and would like guidance. It’s scary at first, but you’ll ultimately grow by being honest and open. Plus, you’ll almost immediately feel better when you no longer feel like you’re hiding this big secret.

Glassdoor: The role of a   software developer  is very popular right now. It’s hot and in demand for a variety of industries. In your experience, why is the role crucial for Philips? Youssef Hawili:   Software today has invaded or permeated our society in every aspect. Whether it’s our dating lives, with communication, our cell phones, our cars, our financial assets, healthcare, it’s really everywhere. And it’s growing more and more with this new digitization of healthcare. Philips has transformed into a healthcare software company. So, as a result of that, software is extremely important in every aspect of our work. Glassdoor: When you’re interviewing candidates, how important is it for them to understand the business of healthcare tech? What should they know about the problems that Philips is trying to solve? Youssef Hawili:  I, personally, don’t look for healthcare experience as a requirement because it’s hard to find people with healthcare background as well as computer science background, as well as a specific type of technology and soft skills that we are looking for. For my team, as long as you find the right minds that are able to understand requirements, translate them into designs and architecture and build a system out of it, then they can learn the domain of healthcare as they move forward. Glassdoor: Working with teams to develop and support solutions and experiences as a developer can seem broad and somewhat intangible. How would you describe a developer’s day-to-day at Philips? Youssef Hawili:   On a daily basis, the team jumps right into designing, architecting, problem-solving. We plan and execute what’s called a sprint, which is a two-week integration. Every Friday we have our team breakfast to build teamwork and have fun. About four or five times a year, we have coding marathons for a week or two where we sit down in a big conference room or an area that’s just wide open to house the whole team. We bring a lot of sugar and a lot of pizza and we have the 10 to 20 people literally start designing and building together. The reason why we do coding marathons is it really pushes the development cycle much faster. It allows us to collaborate together with other teams in order to build what the customer is looking for. The most important thing we have is the one week of innovation during the year where the team is free to do whatever they want. They can go to Best Buy and buy some new gadget and program it. They can download a new technology and hack at it then demonstrate what they’ve done. In some cases, it translates to something that we want to use and in other cases it an exercise in expanding the mind. Glassdoor: When you are interviewing candidates, what are you looking for? How imperative is it for them to know Philips inside and out? Youssef Hawili:  If you’re asking whether I actually expect them to understand the problems and opportunities we have at Philips, I don’t. However, I expect them to have enough initiative and drive to go online to do their homework, look at Philips, look at the sector we’re in, look at what products we have. Candidates should come up with questions during this homework process and be ready to ask them. My first question for anyone interviewing at Philips is “What do you know about Philips?” followed by “What questions do you have for me?” Glassdoor: What are some of the technical skills that are imperative for candidates applying to this role? Youssef Hawili:   There are two camps of technology stacks that we are looking for. The first is the traditional technology like Microsoft technology, C-Sharp, .net, SQL and that type of programming. The second is cloud technology. Cloud technology includes Amazon Web Services, cloud computing architecture and the underlying structures of the programming language. I’m really looking for modern technology, cloud technology. As long as candidates have the basic job of programming, that is enough from a technical perspective because I really focus more on the soft skills than the technical skills. Soft skills are hard to groom. Technical skills you can always teach someone as long as they have the ability and willingness to learn. Glassdoor: What are some of the   soft skills  you look for in candidates? Youssef Hawili:   In all honesty, I look for passion and inner drive. If they aren’t passionate about software, they’re really not going to succeed. The inner drive drives a couple of things: One is the ability to learn something new as the technology changes as we know technology keeps changing all the time nowadays. And it also allows them to learn on the job, whatever we need them to learn. So inner drive and passion are must-haves. Glassdoor: Lastly, what do you love most about working for Philips? You’ve been there for 23 years, what has kept you engaged and innovating at Philips? Youssef Hawili:   In interviews, I talk about my journey a lot because it’s important for them to know what we stand for.  23 years later, I’m still here. The reason for that is that we have transformed our business many times over and we have had to reinvent ourselves in the last 20 years because medicine is advancing, clinical practice is changing, technology is moving at the speed of light. So its no wonder that, to poets and pedestrians alike, the sight of trash floating in our waterways is a source of indignation and disgust. But unlike the garbage lining our highways that can be collected by a few determined individuals, river trash is harder to remove. Boats are costly, dont operate 24 hours a day, and cant get into tight bends and corners. Urban Rivers, a Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of urban waterways, has a solution: Get a robot to do it. Piloted by anyone online who wants to take a turn nabbing waterborne junk, their crowdsourced trash bot will soon patrol the Chicago River. The system can be used not only for collecting trash, but also for wildlife and fish monitoring. Image: Urban Rivers Awash in raw sewage, trash blown from open dumpsters, and hundreds of Chicago River jellyfish (condoms), the river is ripe for such a tool. To attack such detritus, Urban Rivers originally planned to have participants control a robot from the shore. We were thinking of doing it like an arcade game, says Nick Wesley, Urban Rivers co-founder, and the companys only full-time employee. But the grocery storeat the location they had in mind was less than cooperative about having such a setup on their railing. So Urban Rivers decided to give the controls to the online masses. Wesley and his colleagues created a proof-of-concept bot, put it in the water, made a video, and started a Kickstarter campaign. With the crowdsourced cash and other funds, they raised enough to build a more functional prototype and get the program going. For You: Read the latest in robotic breakthrough from ASME.org. Autonomous trash cleanup would be a godsend for so many things. Nick Wesley, Urban Rivers cofounder The proof-of-concept bot had a limited battery capacity and a scoop on the business end that was less than ideal. The new prototype has a better battery and a new beak-like tool for gathering garbage. Its able to pull into tight corners, close down on any refuse found there, and back up. The biggest challenge, though, is not the collection but the navigation, specifically, getting live video to the online user. The way we originally had it set up, we had it moving forward and side to side, Wesley says. Now it seems the better option is points on a map, so latency becomes less of an issue. Remote trash pickers can already sign up to operate the robot, which will make its splash in June, at Urban Rivers. But the work of Urban Rivers doesnt end when the robot finally hits the water. I think the concept is a really powerful idea, Wesley says. Once we start to see how this works and how people use it, we can move in a lot of directions. One of those directions would to be autonomize the robot. The fun, interactive, video-game angle of the current system would be lost, an army of roving river Roombas, sucking up waste on their own, could quickly and efficiently clean up our waterways. Even then, challenges would exist. One of the difficult things is identifying trash, Wesley says. How does it know what trash is, what a stick is? Urban Rivers is currently working with researchers to solve that problem. Once the current robot has been working for a few months, the organization will have hundreds of hours of video that could translate to artificial intelligences and be used to teach the robot to recognize trash. The technologyall open sourcecould eventually create a landlubber collector as well. Autonomous trash cleanup would be a godsend for so many things, Wesley says. Those hours of videoand piles of harvested wastemay eventually help stop trash before it winds up in the water in the first place. Urban Rivers is working with the Shed Aquarium to identify where the trash is coming from so the pollution can be nipped in the bud. Whether the robot remains an online remote controlled immersive experience or becomes an autonomous trash and data collecting civil servant, the idea is sure to spread wherever there is a yearning for clean water. How to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bang How to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bang Your identity is not fixed, but highly fluid.Your identity follows your behaviors.How does this work?It works based on two very important psychological concepts: Self-signaling: which means that, as a person, you evaluate and judge yourself the same way you judge others - based on behavior. So, if you watch yourself do something, you identify yourself with that behavior. If you drink alcohol, for example, you begin to identify yourself as someone who drinks alcohol. If you wake up early, you identify yourself as someone who wakes up early. If you write articles online, you identify yourself as a writer. Thus, how you see yourself is highly fluid and based on your own behaviors. As your behavior changes, your perceived identity changes. Precognition: which means that thoughts don’t necessarily lead to behaviors, but that behaviors can also lead to thoughts. In other words, common wisdom suggests that your inner world creates your outer world. Hence, “mental creation precedes physical creation.” This is certainly true. But behaviors (and environments) can also create internal states. For example, if you jump into an ice-cold bath, you’ll begin to experience a cascade of emotions and thoughts. Or lack of thoughts. What precognition shows is that you can actually PREDICT your inner state by behaving in certain ways, and by placing yourself in certain environments. Thus, change doesn’t only happen from the inside out, but also from the outside in. Both of these ideas are strongly related to other research in psychology, which suggests that behaviors generally come BEFORE psychological states. Again, this goes against most common wisdom.My favorite example is the research on self-efficacy (confidence), which shows that confidence isn’t what produces high performance. But rather, that high performance is what produces confidence.Put simply, if you want to have confidence, you can have it. All you have to do is behave in desired ways, even for a short period of time.Why does all of this matter?It matters because you have the power to radically change your identity.Even at a biological level, new science in epigenetics and neuroplasticity is showing how malleable and fluid our biology is.The problem with succeedingMost people plateau.Even successful people.It’s actually very common for people who are succeeding to get stuck.Think about some of your favorite authors, musicians, and even companies.At some point, they generally s top being as innovative.We all have that band we love, whose first album or two had way more soul. Then, once they became famous, their music became far tamer.The same is often true of world-class chefs.Once a restaurant becomes highly successful, they usually stop innovating the menu as much.Once something is working, it’s hard to go back to ground zero.In psychological terms, your motivation can go from approach-oriented to avoid-oriented.Specifically, all goals are either offensive or defensive.If you’re seeking to advance your current position, you’re “approaching.”If you’re seeking to maintain your position, or avoid something bad from happening, you’re “avoiding.”When you’re approaching, you’re less concerned about risks and more focused on rewards. You’re willing to take risks. You’re willing to fail. You’re being PULLED forward.When you’re avoiding, you’re less concerned about the rewards and more focused on the risks. And you have no desire t o proactively confront those risks. Instead, you’re simply trying to shield yourself from any problems that come your way.I’ve seen this with many of my role models. For example, some of my favorite authors have shifted from approach-oriented to avoid-oriented.I can see it in their work.It’s become far safer.They are making far less significant ideological attempts in their writing. Their books are becoming more mainstream. Obviously calculated and less intuitive and inspired.When you begin succeeding, your focus can shift from WHY to WHAT. Instead of operating from your core, you’re simply trying to maintain success.This is how you get stuck.This is how you get confused and lose your identity.Are you on offense or defense?Are you approaching or avoiding?Are you proactively becoming the person you want to be?Or are you holding on to the person you think you are?The antidote: Never stop re-inventing yourselfIn the brilliant Netflix documentary, Chef’s Table, which highlight s the lives of the world’s most successful chefs, one particular episode stands out.The number one chef in Asia, Gaggan Anand, is known for spontaneously throwing out his entire menu and starting from scratch. Even when his current menu is getting lots of attention.This may not seem like a big deal, but it is.When a restaurant starts getting recognized and certain awards, it’s generally based on the menu and overall atmosphere.Being literally number one in Asia, it would make sense for Gaggan to keep his restaurant how it is.But that’s not what he does.Creativity, and always pushing his own boundaries, is what he is about.So just because something is working doesn’t give him permission to stop evolving.So he reinvents himself.Over and over and over.No matter how hard it is to walk away from something brilliant.A true creator never stops pushing their boundaries.They never stop reinventing.Once you become awesome at something, use your new LEARNING ABILITIES to become awesome at something else.The whole notion of “finding your calling” has led people to have fixed views of themselves.There isn’t just one thing you were born to do.You can expand and grow in countless ways. Especially after you learn the process of learning. You can take all of your experience becoming great at something, and quickly become proficient at something else.In this way, you never plateau. You’re always growing and evolving as a person.The 30-day challenge to finish 2018 with a bangGiven that your identity is fluid and malleable, you have an amazing opportunity to redefine who you are.All you have to do is consistently and boldly reshape your behavior.You can do this in the form of a 30-day challenge.What’s something you’ve wanted to do, that you haven’t done?Or, what’s something that would clearly lead you to a place you’d like to be?It could be 30 days of extreme health and fitness.That would definitely change things.It could be facing an extreme fear: like 30 days of asking people on dates.It could be 30 days of writing articles, or filming videos.Whatever it is, if you do it for 30 days, your identity will change.Your fears will become cauterized and neutralized.You’ll adapt to your new behaviors.Your psychological state will change.You’ll begin to identify with your new behaviors.Will you have to deal with some negative emotions along the way?Will you face a load of resistance and fear?Will you want to quit?The answer is probably yes to all of those questions.But THIS is how you separate yourself from the masses.This is how you make quantum leaps in your progression, while most people make incremental progress.This is how you consciously shape your identity and future.Where will you be in 30 days from now?WHO will you be 30 days from now?Ready to upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately.
