Debunking the Worst USAJOBS Federal Application Myths
Debunking the Worst USAJOBS Federal Application MythsDebunking the Worst USAJOBS Federal Application MythsDebunking the Worst USAJOBS Federal Application MythsFederal jobseekers need to have confidence in the USAJOBS automated application system for federal promotions. These comments and complaints are the most prevalent among federal jobseekers. Its time to debunk the myths and apply for mora federal jobs the right away.True or False?USAJOBS resumes are scanned for keywords by an automated system.NOT TRUE.USAJOBS federal resumes are scanned real people, by HUMAN RESOURCES SPECIALISTS who actually read the resumes. And HR specialists do read for keywords. The HR specialists either read the resumes on the screen or print them to review, then determine the Best Qualified and prepare the List of Certified Eligible Candidates for the supervisor.True or False? On USAJOBS announcements, the KSAs were eliminated on Nov. 1, 2010.MOSTLY TRUE.Most federal agency philanthropisch Capital Officers are attempting to comply with the 11/1/10 Executive Initiative by President Obama, to eliminate the separate written narratives KSAs from initial applications. This is a recommendation, notlage a law. So, you will still find the KSAs written in the vacancy announcement. There could be instructions to include examples or language in your resume or its possible that you may have to write them later if you are referred to a supervisor.Additionally, the KSA accomplishments will be critical for your Structured Interview with a federal agency. Here is some good news The long written KSA narratives will mostly be eliminated, but the short four- to six-line mini-KSAs are going to thrive with these accomplishments inside the federal resume.True or False? When you apply for a job through USAJOBS, you never hear from anyone after you apply for a federal job.NOT TRUE, USUALLY.The USAJOBS Answer Tracking System is good for tracking the application. In President Obamas initiative, he asked feder al human resources specialists to communicate more and more frequently with jobseekers. You can see all kinds of information, i.e., if you are found eligible, best qualified, referred, did not meet minimum qualifications or were best qualified, but not among the most qualified.True or False? You have to add the street addresses for each employer for your entire career in the USAJOBS federal resume.NOT TRUE.You only have to add city, state and zip of employers in the last 10 years.True or False? You have to include your college and high school years of graduation in the USAJOBS resume builder.NOT TRUE.You do not have to add college and high school graduation dates, which in some cases could indicate ages of applicants who are over 50. I recommend not including dates in 1970s and 80s on the resume.True or False?Your USAJOBS resume is your life history.NOT TRUE.The official instructions for What to Include in your Federal Resume state that you should include Recent and Relevant positions for the job. Recent in this case means 10 years. You can add positions older than 10 years, but keep those jobs shorter and dont include anything over 20 years old. Relevant would be any job that demonstrates specialized experience for the position. The former application form, SF-171, was considered to be a life history application.True or False? When you apply through ApplicationManager.gov or USAJOBS.gov, you cant get the score of your federal resume.NOT TRUE.You can get your score. Sometimes your resume / questionnaire score will be posted in application tracking pages of both of these automated application sites. Sometimes the HR specialist will simply write that you were Eligible, Best Qualified or Referred without the score. If the score isnt posted, you can request your score by emailing the HR representative from the same email address that is in your application. This information will help you on your future applications. For instance, if your score is 99 and you were not r eferred to a supervisor, it might indicate a veteran had extra points and the veterans application rose to the top of the list. Or, if you are Eligible but not Referred and your score is 89 or 92, you might want to work on the resume to improve it and make it match the announcement better. Some of the specialized experience could be missing.True or False? You can simply upload your private industry resume into the USAJOBS builder now and start applying for federal jobs.Technically, yes, you can do this.BUT if the resume you upload does not include all of the information required on the federal resume, you will not be considered for a federal position. To be considered, the resume must contain work experience, month and year hours per week worked supervisors names and contact numbers city, state and zip of employers. Additionally, the uploaded resume may not upload along with the various questionnaire systems that different agencies use. The Resume Builder is a safer application.True or False? When you apply for a position with USAJOBS, if you check off that you will accept a Permanent position, you will also be considered for Temp or Term positions.NOT TRUE.You must check off each type of position you will consider. It is advantageous to check of as many types of positions that you can accept, because Temp or Term positions may be convert to Permanent positions later. You can also check out this article in FedSmith.com.More federal job search myths can be found in this article posted on AOL Jobs.

10 Tips for Conducting a Long-Distance Job Search
10 Tips for Conducting a Long-Distance Job Search 10 Tips for Conducting a Long-Distance Job Search Want to relocate for work? Ten tips for managing a long-distance job search.Question: Whatâs the best way to manage a long-distance job search? â" CB of Acton, MAAnswer: Whenever someone talks about relocating, I immediately want to ask: âWhy do you want to move?âI ask this because relocating, especially in todayâs saturated job market, can be difficult to do. Unless your skill set is incredibly unique and in high demand, recruiters and hiring managers will likely choose local candidates over out-of-towners to fill their roles. Why?For one, out-of-towners are more expensive. The company often has to pick up relocation costs. And second, theyâre considered more of a flight risk. If you donât have to relocate, then I donât recommend doing it.But I understand the decision is not always in your hands. You may need to move back home to take care of an ailing parent. Or your significant other was just relocated for work and you need to follow. Or maybe the market has shifted and requires you to move.If relocation is likely on your horizon, I recommend following these ten steps to make your long-distance search run more smoothly.Do your market research.Whenever possible, research the market trends in your industry and identify locations where your line of work is in high demand and growing. This makes your skill set more valuable, and your current location less of an issue.Consider your roots.Consider locations where you either lived or worked there before, or have family there. Play up these facts in your cover letter to show recruiters you didnât choose this location on a whim â" youâre a safe bet.Target a specific location.Itâs better to conduct a targeted job search, than taking an âIâll move anywhereâ approach because you will need to familiarize yourself with the market, build up connections and participate in networking activities in your desired location.Take a trip. Visit the location to make sure itâs the right place for you and your family. Familiarize yourself with the area â" whatâs the night life like? What neighborhoods would you want to live in? How are the schools?Make sure you can afford to move. Check out the cost of living differences between your current and your desired locations, as well as the going rate for your jobâs compensation. This could change your salary requirements.Show family solidarity.Include the phrase âMy family and I are willing to relocate to [location] at personal expenseâ (if applicable) within your resume and LinkedIn profileâs executive summary. This shows your commitment to relocate, and your familyâs support.Donât include your address.Remove your mailing address from your resume.Thereâs a lot of debate over this practice, but I prefer to leave the address off, rather than use a relativeâs address in your target location. It just looks weird when your address says California but your current job says Connecticut, you know? If an application requires an address, thatâs when I recommend using your relativeâs local address.Make networking a high priority. You need all the help you can get when youâre relocating. Go through your contacts to determine who lives in your desired location and reconnect. Identify fellow alum who live in the area and introduce yourself. Start reading the local news online and explore local business directories and the chamber of commerce. Identify local groups to connect with that are industry-related.Be prepared to travel. If youâre going to relocate, you must commit to traveling often for face-to-face networking and interviewing. Whenever possible, try to line up meetings around the block of time in the area to make your life easier (especially if youâre currently employed).Master the virtual interview.Become comfortable with using Skype or other video conferencing software, as youâll likely need to use it during the interview process.Utilize these tips and youâll be on your way to landing tha t job across the country!

I Confessed to Feeling Lost at Work to My Boss - The Muse
I Confessed to Feeling Lost at Work to My Boss - The Muse I Confessed to Feeling Lost at Work to My Boss Even when you know youâre having trouble wrapping your head around a new project, itâs hard to come to grips with the fact that you donât know everything at work. I was Exhibit A of this phenomenon a few years ago after I accepted a job for which I had some pretty glaring knowledge gaps. But as hard as I tried convincing everyone that I knew exactly what I was doing, I eventually had to own up to the fact that I was completely lost. The good news? I didnât get fired. The better news? I learned a few good lessons about admitting you donât know something at work. 1. Your Boss Probably Already Knows When I took that gig, I didnât meet all the qualifications. But I figured Iâd found a way to convince the company that I was still the perfect candidate. Even worse, I assumed that the job would be easier than it looked on paper. I ended up being wrong about everything, and before I knew it, I was spending my nights trying to understand reports that seemed like they were written in another language. But after a month of flailing around, my boss called me into a meeting. Without mincing words, he said, âYouâre not very good at this one thing in particular.â I wanted to deny his claim, especially since it sounded like I was about to be fired. But then he said, âBut I kind of figured that when we hired you.â The truth is that hiring managers usually have a strong grasp of what theyâre looking for during the interview process- and sometimes, that even means taking a chance on someone whoâs not the ideal person for the job right this second. 2. You Can Only âFake it âTil You Make itâ For So Long For a few weeks at that same job, I handed in assignments that I figured would be good enough. They showed that I had at least some competency in the role, and I thought the final products would be obvious cries for help to my boss. The only problem is that by handing in incomplete and incorrect work, I was wasting a lot of my colleaguesâ time. One of the biggest lessons I learned was that I needed to ask for help sooner. I probably wouldâve gotten the answers I was looking for- and ultimately, I wouldâve turned in better work, faster. On top of that, I probably wouldnât have annoyed all my teammates about so many little details that I was hired to handle. 3. Itâs Up to You to Figure Out What You Need to Be More Qualified After my first few weeks on the job, I figured Iâd have more training available to me. At the very least, I thought Iâd have a couple days with my boss to learn the ropes of the job and the industry. But the reality was that he had a lot of things on his plate- and to a large degree, heâd hired me to handle the problems I was struggling to figure out. Eventually he was blunt with me and said, âI know you donât know how to do this, and I know you need help. But on some of this, you need to identify how you can get the information you need without knocking on my door every few minutes.â I thought this was harsh at the time, but I know now that he was right. I was using my knowledge gaps as excuses for bad work, and it was showing. While there were very specific things about the company I needed to ask about, there were also online resources, books, and even courses that I couldâve relied on for some of the more general things I was trying to figure out. If youâre in these shoes, take it from me- make yourself a list of the things youâre not good at, and see how many you figure out on your own. (And if youâre struggling, here are five ways to handle being lost that wonât make you look bad.) Some of the things youâll learn about yourself when you admit youâre lost arenât the most fun to come to terms with. But even the toughest lessons can be helpful, especially when youâre denying yourself the help you need to improve at your job. And you might not always like what you hear when you own up to your knowledge gaps, but you will grow from the experience. So take the leap and tell your manager that youâre struggling and would like guidance. Itâs scary at first, but youâll ultimately grow by being honest and open. Plus, youâll almost immediately feel better when you no longer feel like youâre hiding this big secret.

Inside the Software Developer Role at Philips
Inside the Software Developer Role at Philips Inside the Software Developer Role at Philips As one of the best jobs in America for 2019 , the role of Software Developer is core to any thriving, innovative tech company. From design to coding to testing, software developers are a jack of all trades and in demand from San Francisco to Amsterdam and back. Just ask Philips . The healthcare tech company is eager to hire developers straight out of college or early in their career, and not only are they looking for the technical chops but soft skills are in hot demand as well. âSoft skills are hard to groom,â says Youssef Hawili , Senior Director of Innovation, Technology & Architecture at Philips. âTechnical skills you can always teach someone as long as they have the ability and willingness to learn.â To prepare yourself for a software role at Philips , Hawili shares interview tips and secrets. Glassdoor: The role of a software developer is very popular right now. Itâs hot and in demand for a variety of industries. In your experience, why is the role crucial for Philips? Youssef Hawili: Software today has invaded or permeated our society in every aspect. Whether itâs our dating lives, with communication, our cell phones, our cars, our financial assets, healthcare, itâs really everywhere. And itâs growing more and more with this new digitization of healthcare. Philips has transformed into a healthcare software company. So, as a result of that, software is extremely important in every aspect of our work. Glassdoor: When youâre interviewing candidates, how important is it for them to understand the business of healthcare tech? What should they know about the problems that Philips is trying to solve? Youssef Hawili: I, personally, donât look for healthcare experience as a requirement because itâs hard to find people with healthcare background as well as computer science background, as well as a specific type of technology and soft skills that we are looking for. For my team, as long as you find the right minds that are able to understand requirements, translate them into designs and architecture and build a system out of it, then they can learn the domain of healthcare as they move forward. Glassdoor: Working with teams to develop and support solutions and experiences as a developer can seem broad and somewhat intangible. How would you describe a developerâs day-to-day at Philips? Youssef Hawili: On a daily basis, the team jumps right into designing, architecting, problem-solving. We plan and execute whatâs called a sprint, which is a two-week integration. Every Friday we have our team breakfast to build teamwork and have fun. About four or five times a year, we have coding marathons for a week or two where we sit down in a big conference room or an area thatâs just wide open to house the whole team. We bring a lot of sugar and a lot of pizza and we have the 10 to 20 people literally start designing and building together. The reason why we do coding marathons is it really pushes the development cycle much faster. It allows us to collaborate together with other teams in order to build what the customer is looking for. The most important thing we have is the one week of innovation during the year where the team is free to do whatever they want. They can go to Best Buy and buy some new gadget and program it. They can download a new technology and hack at it then demonstrate what theyâve done. In some cases, it translates to something that we want to use and in other cases it an exercise in expanding the mind. Glassdoor: When you are interviewing candidates, what are you looking for? How imperative is it for them to know Philips inside and out? Youssef Hawili: If youâre asking whether I actually expect them to understand the problems and opportunities we have at Philips, I donât. However, I expect them to have enough initiative and drive to go online to do their homework, look at Philips, look at the sector weâre in, look at what products we have. Candidates should come up with questions during this homework process and be ready to ask them. My first question for anyone interviewing at Philips is âWhat do you know about Philips?â followed by âWhat questions do you have for me?â Glassdoor: What are some of the technical skills that are imperative for candidates applying to this role? Youssef Hawili: There are two camps of technology stacks that we are looking for. The first is the traditional technology like Microsoft technology, C-Sharp, .net, SQL and that type of programming. The second is cloud technology. Cloud technology includes Amazon Web Services, cloud computing architecture and the underlying structures of the programming language. Iâm really looking for modern technology, cloud technology. As long as candidates have the basic job of programming, that is enough from a technical perspective because I really focus more on the soft skills than the technical skills. Soft skills are hard to groom. Technical skills you can always teach someone as long as they have the ability and willingness to learn. Glassdoor: What are some of the soft skills you look for in candidates? Youssef Hawili: In all honesty, I look for passion and inner drive. If they arenât passionate about software, theyâre really not going to succeed. The inner drive drives a couple of things: One is the ability to learn something new as the technology changes as we know technology keeps changing all the time nowadays. And it also allows them to learn on the job, whatever we need them to learn. So inner drive and passion are must-haves. Glassdoor: Lastly, what do you love most about working for Philips? Youâve been there for 23 years, what has kept you engaged and innovating at Philips? Youssef Hawili: In interviews, I talk about my journey a lot because itâs important for them to know what we stand for. 23 years later, Iâm still here. The reason for that is that we have transformed our business many times over and we have had to reinvent ourselves in the last 20 years because medicine is advancing, clinical practice is changing, technology is moving at the speed of light. This is what has kept me engaged and innovative all of these years. Thatâs why Iâve stayed for 23 years.

Remote Robot Cleans Trash from Water
Remote Robot Cleans Trash from Water Remote Robot Cleans Trash from Water Remote Robot Cleans Trash from Water From Heraclitus to Longfellow, from Twain to Muir, the river has been a metaphor for life, a symbol of peace and impermanence, and a reflection of our environment. So its no wonder that, to poets and pedestrians alike, the sight of trash floating in our waterways is a source of indignation and disgust. But unlike the garbage lining our highways that can be collected by a few determined individuals, river trash is harder to remove. Boats are costly, dont operate 24 hours a day, and cant get into tight bends and corners. Urban Rivers, a Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of urban waterways, has a solution: Get a robot to do it. Piloted by anyone online who wants to take a turn nabbing waterborne junk, their crowdsourced trash bot will soon patrol the Chicago River. The system can be used not only for collecting trash, but also for wildlife and fish monitoring. Image: Urban Rivers Awash in raw sewage, trash blown from open dumpsters, and hundreds of Chicago River jellyfish (condoms), the river is ripe for such a tool. To attack such detritus, Urban Rivers originally planned to have participants control a robot from the shore. We were thinking of doing it like an arcade game, says Nick Wesley, Urban Rivers co-founder, and the companys only full-time employee. But the grocery storeat the location they had in mind was less than cooperative about having such a setup on their railing. So Urban Rivers decided to give the controls to the online masses. Wesley and his colleagues created a proof-of-concept bot, put it in the water, made a video, and started a Kickstarter campaign. With the crowdsourced cash and other funds, they raised enough to build a more functional prototype and get the program going. For You: Read the latest in robotic breakthrough from ASME.org. Autonomous trash cleanup would be a godsend for so many things. Nick Wesley, Urban Rivers cofounder The proof-of-concept bot had a limited battery capacity and a scoop on the business end that was less than ideal. The new prototype has a better battery and a new beak-like tool for gathering garbage. Its able to pull into tight corners, close down on any refuse found there, and back up. The biggest challenge, though, is not the collection but the navigation, specifically, getting live video to the online user. The way we originally had it set up, we had it moving forward and side to side, Wesley says. Now it seems the better option is points on a map, so latency becomes less of an issue. Remote trash pickers can already sign up to operate the robot, which will make its splash in June, at Urban Rivers. But the work of Urban Rivers doesnt end when the robot finally hits the water. I think the concept is a really powerful idea, Wesley says. Once we start to see how this works and how people use it, we can move in a lot of directions. One of those directions would to be autonomize the robot. The fun, interactive, video-game angle of the current system would be lost, an army of roving river Roombas, sucking up waste on their own, could quickly and efficiently clean up our waterways. Even then, challenges would exist. One of the difficult things is identifying trash, Wesley says. How does it know what trash is, what a stick is? Urban Rivers is currently working with researchers to solve that problem. Once the current robot has been working for a few months, the organization will have hundreds of hours of video that could translate to artificial intelligences and be used to teach the robot to recognize trash. The technologyall open sourcecould eventually create a landlubber collector as well. Autonomous trash cleanup would be a godsend for so many things, Wesley says. Those hours of videoand piles of harvested wastemay eventually help stop trash before it winds up in the water in the first place. Urban Rivers is working with the Shed Aquarium to identify where the trash is coming from so the pollution can be nipped in the bud. Whether the robot remains an online remote controlled immersive experience or becomes an autonomous trash and data collecting civil servant, the idea is sure to spread wherever there is a yearning for clean water. Its only a matter of time, if this works the way we intend it to, Wesley says. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. How to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bang
How to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bang How to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bang Your identity is not fixed, but highly fluid.Your identity follows your behaviors. How does this work?It works based on two very important psychological concepts: Self-signaling: which means that, as a person, you evaluate and judge yourself the same way you judge others - based on behavior. So, if you watch yourself do something, you identify yourself with that behavior. If you drink alcohol, for example, you begin to identify yourself as someone who drinks alcohol. If you wake up early, you identify yourself as someone who wakes up early. If you write articles online, you identify yourself as a writer. Thus, how you see yourself is highly fluid and based on your own behaviors. As your behavior changes, your perceived identity changes. Precognition: which means that thoughts donât necessarily lead to behaviors, but that behaviors can also lead to thoughts. In other words, common wisdom suggests that your inner world creates your outer world. Hence, âmental creation precedes physical creation.â This is certainly true. But behaviors (and environments) can also create internal states. For example, if you jump into an ice-cold bath, youâll begin to experience a cascade of emotions and thoughts. Or lack of thoughts. What precognition shows is that you can actually PREDICT your inner state by behaving in certain ways, and by placing yourself in certain environments. Thus, change doesnât only happen from the inside out, but also from the outside in. Both of these ideas are strongly related to other research in psychology, which suggests that behaviors generally come BEFORE psychological states. Again, this goes against most common wisdom. My favorite example is the research on self-efficacy (confidence), which shows that confidence isnât what produces high performance. But rather, that high performance is what produces confidence.Put simply, if you want to have confidence, you can have it. All you have to do is behave in desired ways, even for a short period of time. Why does all of this matter? It matters because you have the power to radically change your identity.Even at a biological level, new science in epigenetics and neuroplasticity is showing how malleable and fluid our biology is.The problem with succeedingMost people plateau.Even successful people.Itâs actually very common for people who are succeeding to get stuck.Think about some of your favorite authors, musicians, and even companies. At some point, they generally s top being as innovative. We all have that band we love, whose first album or two had way more soul. Then, once they became famous, their music became far tamer. The same is often true of world-class chefs.Once a restaurant becomes highly successful, they usually stop innovating the menu as much.Once something is working, itâs hard to go back to ground zero.In psychological terms, your motivation can go from approach-oriented to avoid-oriented.Specifically, all goals are either offensive or defensive. If youâre seeking to advance your current position, youâre âapproaching.âIf youâre seeking to maintain your position, or avoid something bad from happening, youâre âavoiding.âWhen youâre approaching, youâre less concerned about risks and more focused on rewards. Youâre willing to take risks. Youâre willing to fail. Youâre being PULLED forward. When youâre avoiding, youâre less concerned about the rewards and more focused on the risks. And you have no desire t o proactively confront those risks. Instead, youâre simply trying to shield yourself from any problems that come your way.Iâve seen this with many of my role models. For example, some of my favorite authors have shifted from approach-oriented to avoid-oriented.I can see it in their work.Itâs become far safer. They are making far less significant ideological attempts in their writing. Their books are becoming more mainstream. Obviously calculated and less intuitive and inspired. When you begin succeeding, your focus can shift from WHY to WHAT. Instead of operating from your core, youâre simply trying to maintain success. This is how you get stuck. This is how you get confused and lose your identity. Are you on offense or defense? Are you approaching or avoiding? Are you proactively becoming the person you want to be?Or are you holding on to the person you think you are?The antidote: Never stop re-inventing yourselfIn the brilliant Netflix documentary, Chefâs Table, which highlight s the lives of the worldâs most successful chefs, one particular episode stands out.The number one chef in Asia, Gaggan Anand, is known for spontaneously throwing out his entire menu and starting from scratch. Even when his current menu is getting lots of attention. This may not seem like a big deal, but it is.When a restaurant starts getting recognized and certain awards, itâs generally based on the menu and overall atmosphere.Being literally number one in Asia, it would make sense for Gaggan to keep his restaurant how it is.But thatâs not what he does.Creativity, and always pushing his own boundaries, is what he is about. So just because something is working doesnât give him permission to stop evolving. So he reinvents himself.Over and over and over.No matter how hard it is to walk away from something brilliant.A true creator never stops pushing their boundaries. They never stop reinventing.Once you become awesome at something, use your new LEARNING ABILITIES to become awesome at something else. The whole notion of âfinding your callingâ has led people to have fixed views of themselves. There isnât just one thing you were born to do.You can expand and grow in countless ways. Especially after you learn the process of learning. You can take all of your experience becoming great at something, and quickly become proficient at something else.In this way, you never plateau. Youâre always growing and evolving as a person. The 30-day challenge to finish 2018 with a bangGiven that your identity is fluid and malleable, you have an amazing opportunity to redefine who you are.All you have to do is consistently and boldly reshape your behavior. You can do this in the form of a 30-day challenge.Whatâs something youâve wanted to do, that you havenât done?Or, whatâs something that would clearly lead you to a place youâd like to be?It could be 30 days of extreme health and fitness. That would definitely change things. It could be facing an extreme fear: like 30 days of asking people on dates. It could be 30 days of writing articles, or filming videos.Whatever it is, if you do it for 30 days, your identity will change.Your fears will become cauterized and neutralized.Youâll adapt to your new behaviors.Your psychological state will change.Youâll begin to identify with your new behaviors. Will you have to deal with some negative emotions along the way? Will you face a load of resistance and fear? Will you want to quit? The answer is probably yes to all of those questions. But THIS is how you separate yourself from the masses. This is how you make quantum leaps in your progression, while most people make incremental progress. This is how you consciously shape your identity and future.Where will you be in 30 days from now?WHO will you be 30 days from now?Ready to upgrade?Iâve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly.Get the cheat sheet here! This article first appeared on Medium.

Engineering Painless Immunization
Engineering Painless Immunization Engineering Painless Immunization Engineering Painless Immunization Like most engineers, Mark Prausnitz chose his profession because he likes to solve problems. Ever since his student days, he has been motivated by one kind of problem, one where he can make a major difference in peoples lives. That motivation, spurred by his idea about a novel method for drug delivery, has driven him to find a way to make vaccines, drugs, and the like more affordable and accessible to many more people around the world, particularly in developing countries. Today, Prausnitz, the Regents professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and director of the universitys Center for Drug Design, Development and Delivery, believes within five years he will see his decades-long dream come to fruition. He and his Georgia Tech team and other collaborators have developed a new technology for drug delivery, a seemingly simple adhesive, bandage-like patch carrying a hundred or more dissolvable microscopic needles composed of a drug or vaccine that is absorbed through the skin. That delivery system carrying influenza vaccine recently completed a human clinical trial with approximately 100 participants conducted by collaborator Emory University. The dime-sized patch is applied by pressing it painlessly into the skin at the wrist. The study found that the patches were just as effective in immunizing against influenza as a traditional application. The patches are more affordable than todays syringe because they can be stored without refrigeration and self-administered and are easily disposed after use. The team is also working on microneedle patches for other vaccines, including for measles, rubella, and polio. Prausnitz began work on microneedle drug delivery some 22 years ago, not long after he had earned a PhD from MIT and joined Georgia Tech. There, he teamed with Mark Allen, a professor and electrical engineer working on microfabrication for electronic devices, to begin adapting electronics industry technology to make microneedle structures. Along the way, the team overcame a variety of engineering challenges. The first challenge was in making them at all, Prausnitz says. Then in terms of advancing the technology from a scientific standpoint, a lot of it was step by step. The microneedle vaccine patch contains tiny needles that dissolve into the skin, carrying vaccine. Image: Georgia Tech The first microneedles were made of silicon, which the team quickly realized was not right for a medical device. Its a good semiconductor, but its brittle, and its expensive so we moved to other materials, first metals like stainless steel, then polymers that are biodegradable and water soluble, Praunitz says. One major challenge involved the biomechanics of the interrelationship between the microneedle patch and the skin. The needles are less than a millimeter long. If they arent designed and applied right, pressing them onto the skin could deform the skin, making a little valley in it, and not actually puncture it, Prausnitz says. Thus, the microneedles need to be strong and sharp so that they puncture the skin with less force, deforming the skin less where the puncture occurs. In order to avoid the use of an applicator, not desirable since a disposable could increase the cost and a reusable would need sterilization, the team opted for thumb-based insertion by optimizing the geometry of the microneedles and incorporating a device that makes a clicking sound to indicate that enough force has been applied. At first, instructions for application were press hard, but that meant different things to different people, Prausnitz says. Applying the microneedle vaccine patch. Image: Rob Felt, Georgia Tech Fabrication also presented challenges. Unlike a hollow needle in a syringe, the microneedles are solid and composed of sucrose, with the influenza vaccine encapsulated within. When applied, they get wet from body fluids, the needles dissolve, and the vaccine is absorbed through the skin. To ensure that the needles have that functionality, a sophisticated fabrication method is used to make a master structure in the shape of the device, and then an inverse mold is made. The solutions are cast onto the inverse mold and dried. Controlling the deposition onto the mold turns out to be quite important, Prausnitz says. In part because you want the solution to properly fill the mold and youre talking hundreds of microns in the longest dimension and something like one micron in the smaller one. Additionally, encapsulated bioactive molecules dont like to be dry so the team had to figure out how to formulate the solutions with just the right additives to make the microneedles strong enough not to bend or break as they puncture the skin. Sucrose is a simple one, Prausnitz says. The next step is to conduct a larger clinical study and address some manufacturing issues. Its a new manufacturing method and must be done at reasonable cost. We want patches made for mass influenza vaccination campaigns in developing countries, Prausnitz says. The question is, Can you make 100 million at sufficiently low cost, reliably and robustly? The answer right now is not yet. But we think we have a way. It remains to be proven, he says. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further Discussion The question is can you make 100 million at sufficiently low cost, reliably and robustly.Prof. Mark Prausnitz, Georgia Tech

New Rules New Copper Alloys
New Rules New Copper Alloys New Rules New Copper Alloys A federal law to further reduce the amount of lead in drinking water has manufacturers of copper alloy plumbing fixtures, fittings and valves replacing their products with ones manufactured with new copper alloys that do not contain lead. But the peculiarities of the market and a new amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act allow the original fittings to still be used in industrial applications while those charged with setting technical standards work to catch up. Early this year, President Obama signed into law the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act, a measure that defines lead free as not containing more than 0.2% lead when used with respect to solder and flux, and not more than a weighted average of 0.25% lead when used with respect to wetted surfaces of pipes and pipe and plumbing fittings and fixtures. It also establishes a formula to calculate the weighted average of lead content in a pipe or plumbing fitting or fixture. As a practical matter, manufacturers had already begun selling new lead-free pipe, valvesand fittings because California, Vermont, and Maryland beat the federal government to the punch and had already passed similar legislation mandating the new lead-free products. But fittings and valves commonly used in low-pressure, low-temperature plumbing settings are also often used in high-pressure, high-temperature steam systems. The new lead-free products are giving standards-setting organizations pause because the lead-free alloys have not been fully vetted for high-pressure use. The data is not there to support high-pressure, high-temperature alloys, says Mark Clark, a codes and standards engineer with NIBCO INC., Elkhart, IN. There are already manufacturers putting steam ratings on items produced from unproven lead-free alloys. Clark also is a member of ASMEs B-16 committee that handles valves and fittings. The committee now is beginning work to include new alloys into standards for low-pressure plumbing, he says. Some of the common alloys used in fittings and valves include C37700, C84400, C83600, and C92200, he says. All are identified as being acceptable for use at temperatures of 400 F or higher, and pressures of 200 psi or higher. But all of them have a lead content greater than the 0.25% maximum limit set by the federal and state bill that are now in effect. Clark emphasizes that the old fittings and valves remain in compliance for high-pressure industrial systems. The point is that neither new nor old fittings can be used interchangeably any more. Thats where the scramble is at, says Clark. Most, if not all, manufacturers now supply both types of valves and fittings. But it can become a complex and more costly process if manufacturers have to produce essentially the same product using current methods and materials in addition to different alloys and new tooling, patterns, and core boxes. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the main sources of lead in drinking water are through corrosion of household plumbing systems and erosion of natural deposit. Lead can leach into water from pipes, solder, fixtures, faucets, and fittings. The agency estimates that 10%-20% of human exposure to lead comes through drinking water. For infants who are primarily fed mixed formula, the agency estimates exposure rates of 40%-60%. NIBCO and other manufacturers had anticipated more stringent regulations earlier in the decade. NIBCOs lead-free HydroPure line introduced in the early 1990s simply did not gain market acceptance, notes Clark. The company monitors regulatory developments and continues to offer lead-free products. But from a manufacturing standpoint, the question is, can we expand the use of lead-free alloys beyond water applications or continue to maintain a dual inventory? he says. How is a manufacturer to monitor the end-use application when products both containing lead and lead-free are available for multiple users? It appears a dual inventory will be needed, at least for the immediate future. Fittings and valves used at higher pressures and temperatures fall under the ASME boiler pressure vessel code and B31 piping codes, notes Clark. The challenge now is how do the committees establish the pressure and temperature limits for these products without the data to support use at elevated pressures and temperatures, he says. Establishing the data could take time. For instance, testing for creep must be done over the long term, for more than one year, Clark says. Clark says his committee is discussing a research project that would identify the alloys most significant for multiple uses. It could be used as a basis for design that is good for the industry, he says. The data is not there to support high-pressure, high-temperature alloys.Mark Clark, a codes and standards engineer with NIBCO Inc
